When I visited Cham was in the winter of 2001. It was a good winter, or as the locals would call it a real winter. It was really a fantastic time.
That inaugural skiing holiday was done very much on a limited budget. I did not stay in a plush hotel. All we had was a two bedroom place for five of us.

Chamonix Mont-Blanc today is remarkably different to the ski resort it was 10 or 15 years back. Then it was a town for tough mountaineers and extreme snowboarders and skiers. The seassonaire bars have vanished, as have many of the climbing shops replaced with pricy bars and fashionable boutiques. Chamonix now has a big choice of accommodation and catered chalets available. The tiny cramped flats and studios are still available, now confined mainly to Cham Sud, but the scope and polish of Cham accommodation has increased. Now you will find an over abundance of Cham chalets, from luxury ski catered chalets to basic ski catered chalets. In today’s market, it seems that catered ski catered chalet holidays are increasing in popularity.
What have I been doing since I got to Chamonix Mont-Blanc ? I set up a luxury catered catered ski chalet company with my girlfriend, providing ski holidays to mainly British clients. Today, a decade on, I own three Chamonix Mont Blanc chalets and I am living out my greatest fantasy.
Of course that is if your dream is building for 7 months of the summer frantically trying to get ready for the encroaching winter, and then looking after and driving guests around for the 5 months of winter. It’s not a walk in a park but I do get to live and ski in one of the most beauteous places in the world so it cant be all-bad.
